Rt Hon Stephen McPartland MP
Working hard for you
in Stevenage, Knebworth, Codicote, Datchworth and Aston

Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, has been elected as Chairman of the Regulatory Reform Select Committee. In Parliament, Select Committees are very powerful and a huge part of the legislative process. It also means he becomes a member of the Liaison Select Committee, which is made up of all Select Committee Chairmen and takes evidence from the Prime Minister on matters of public policy. Stephen McPartland will also remain a member of the Finance Select Committee.

Stephen McPartland MP said, “The Regulatory Reform committee looks at Legislative Reform Orders, which are used to remove or reduce burdens on business and the public resulting directly or indirectly from legislation. It is a form of 'fast-tracking' non-controversial legislative change without the need to introduce a new Bill before Parliament. The Committee can also look at the wider deregulatory work of the Government as part of its remit to consider 'Matters relating to regulatory reform'.

“I am very pleased, as it is a powerful committee with huge responsibility and a real privilege to be elected as the Chairman.”

The Member of Parliament for Stevenage, Stephen McPartland, visited Year 6 at Lodge Farm School for a Q&A session as part of their project on Parliament and the 'Big Vote'.

Stephen McPartland MP said, "It was great fun taking part in the Q&A session with Year 6 pupils from Lodge Farm School. I really enjoyed my visit and hope to be invited back soon to see more of the school and other classes. These visits always demonstrate how many young people are interested in politics and are happy to ask the tough questions."

Nicola Randall, Assistant Headteacher and a Year 6 teacher, invited Stephen along to the school and commented after the visit, "Our Y6 pupils found Stephen McPartland's visit very informative and the message he gave about wanting to make a difference has certainly inspired many of our pupils to be more interested in politics. Following the visit, the children have now got big plans in mind for writing their own manifestos in preparation for the 'Big Vote'. National Parliament Week has been a fantastic way to help pupils understand how our country is governed and to explore the important role MPs play within our community. Who knows, we might even have the future Prime Minister here at Lodge Farm!"

Stevenage Borough Labour Councillor, Douglas Bainbridge has joined the Conservatives and will fight the elections in May 2018 as a Conservative Candidate. Doug was welcomed to the Conservative Party by Local Government Minister Marcus Jones MP, Stephen McPartland MP and Alexander Clarkson, Chairman of Stevenage Conservative Association.

Doug said, “I have never really been a socialist and it is clear the Labour Party in Stevenage are becoming more extreme as they follow Jeremy Corbyn. There is also an obsession with Stevenage Borough Council controlling the town centre regeneration, but they have no money to do it. The Council launched their plans over 22 years ago and have never got them off the ground. It is time the Labour Council stepped aside, stopped coming up with unfunded schemes and let developers work with our local Member of Parliament to get the job done.”

Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, welcomed Doug and said, “I love Stevenage, but its town centre is not fit for purpose. It needs regenerating and bringing forward into the 21st century. The latest plan fails to regenerate the town centre, as it does not include the shops in Queensway, but don’t worry it includes fancy new Council offices! They also want to knock down the Gordon Craig Theatre, build over 1,300 properties on the Leisure Park, close Lytton Way and there is even talk of moving our train station, which 35,000 commuters in the town rely on. Local people want more seats, more services and more destinations, which I am delivering and from June next year we will have direct rail links to Brighton and Gatwick. It is all there in the Local Plan for anyone to read.”

Alexander Clarkson, Chairman of Stevenage Conservative Association added, “Cllr Bainbridge is a fantastic community campaigner and someone who always puts the interests of local people first. He is a great addition to our team and we look forward to campaigning alongside him in Longmeadow. The Conservative Government has made over £30 million available to pump prime the regeneration and we need to be allowed to get on with it, instead of another pointless paper plan from Stevenage Borough Council.“
