I love Stevenage, but its town centre is not fit for purpose. It needs regenerating and bringing forward into the 21st century, it needs to reflect the growing aspirations of the people who live here, but do not shop here. The Local Plan fails to regenerate the town centre, as it does not include the shops in Queensway, but don’t worry it includes fancy new Council offices! Stevenage Borough Council launched their regeneration plans over 22 years ago and have failed time after time to deliver on them. It is time for radical action and for a new town centre in Stevenage, it is time the Council got out of the way and stopped blocking investment in our town with their addiction to car parking charges.
I attended the Local Plan hearings and represented the concerns of local people, thousands of whom believe we need a new Garden City to resolve housing need locally. Sadly, Stevenage Borough Council refused to provide any evidence why this could not be achieved and hired expensive lawyers to argue against community groups. It became clear they just wanted to push through with their plans to destroy our community facilities, knock down the Gordon Craig Theatre, build over 1,300 properties on the Leisure Park, close Lytton Way and fail to regenerate the town centre. The original plan also included moving our train station, which 35,000 commuters in the town rely on. Local people want more seats, more services and more destinations, which I am delivering and from June next year we will have direct rail links to Brighton and Gatwick.
It is all there in the Local Plan for anyone to read. The £50 million Park Place investment I launched recently gives a glimpse of what we can achieve, instead of a pointless paper plan from Stevenage Borough Council. I have previously asked the Government to step in and take action. We have made over £30 million available to pump prime the regeneration and I will continue to deliver for my town of Stevenage.
