Today the UK Parliament marks 100 years since the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which gave all men and some women the vote for the first time. The Vote 100 programme includes a wide range of events and activities commemorating the women and men who fought to achieve electoral equality.

Stephen McPartland, MP for Stevenage, said, “The Representation of the People Act 1918 was a vital step towards the rights women have today, and the centenary of the Act is an incredibly important opportunity for us to reflect on how far we have come, thanks to the extreme bravery and sacrifice of the women who fought – and in some cases died – for equality.

“Whether it is chatting about the issues over a cup of tea, or engaging with one of the many exciting events as part of this year’s UK Parliament Week, there are countless opportunities for schools and community groups across to get involved in this key anniversary.

“We all know that there is still more to do, to create a truly equal society.”

The Representation of the People Act extended the right to vote to all men over 21 and the first women, making this one of the most important centenaries in British democratic history.

Stephen McPartland MP marked Holocaust Memorial Day by signing the Holocaust Educational Trust's Book of Commitment in the Houses of Parliament. It honours the victims and survivors on the Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

Stephen McPartland MP said, “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust. It reminds us all how intolerance and hate in communities can lead to the destruction of so many lives. We must never let the politics of hate lead to such tragic events ever again. I would encourage local people to take a moment and reflect to show their support today.”

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said, “The Holocaust did not start in the gas chambers but with hate filled words. Our mission is to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance. We are very grateful to Stephen McPartland MP for signing the Book of Commitment, signalling a continued commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust as well as challenging antisemitism, prejudice and bigotry in all its forms.”

Holocaust Memorial Day is on 27th January and marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.

Stevenage MP, Stephen McPartland, and London Luton Airport have ongoing discussions regarding the impact of aircraft noise on residents. The latest round of discussions led to London Luton Airport asking aircraft to deploy their landing gear after the town, instead of before it, in an effort to reduce drag and noise. Over the trial period, average noise on the ground reduced by 50% which has been welcomed by local people.

Stephen McPartland MP, said, “I would like to congratulate London Luton Airport on their efforts to reduce the impacts of aircraft noise for those living below the flightpath in Stevenage. I am delighted the delayed deployment of landing gear is now included in the standard operating practices for aircraft arriving at Luton Airport.

"I am extremely encouraged by the work they have put into this trial, but will continue to lobby the airport to ensure they do all they can to minimise the impacts and maximise the benefits of the airport on my constituents.”

Neil Thompson, Operations Director at LLA, said, “The trial is just one part of our commitment to reducing noise and we’re working hard to ensure more of our airline partners adopt this initiative. The 50% noise reduction and positive feedback from local communities has been great to see."
