Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, has been contacted by shocked and disgusted fans of Stevenage Football Club who are outraged at Stevenage Borough Council's latest car parking rip off. Signs have appeared at Fairlands Valley, which show football fans will have to pay £5.20 to park opposite the Lamex Stadium on match days for the new season.
Stephen McPartland MP said, "Stevenage Borough Council's addiction to car parking charges is ridiculous. They already take more than £3million a year in car parking charges, which is preventing the regeneration of Stevenage town centre. Now they are targeting football fans, just at a time when Stevenage FC are trying to build their supporters base. It is unfair on football fans and the club, but it is most unfair on local people who live in nearby roads. We all know that very few people will want to pay the charges and look to park in nearby roads, which will make matchdays a nightmare for local residents.
"It is clear Stevenage Borough Council does not care and thousands of local people have already signed up to my campaign to protect local people from Stevenage Borough Council's car parking rip off. I have raised their addiction to car parking charges in Parliament and with the Prime Minister himself, as Stevenage Borough Council have talked about regenerating our town centre for decades, but cannot give up their addiction to the £3 million in car parking charges, which blocks every regeneration attempt.
"I would urge local people to sign my petition online here so we can keep up the pressure and force Stevenage Borough Council to apologise and move forward by introducing 3 hours free parking so more local people can afford to shop locally. Stevenage is doing really well and we need to stop Stevenage Borough Council sucking the life out of our town with their car parking charges addiction. Please sign the petition online here and help me stand up for Stevenage."
