Local MP Stephen McPartland heard from Liz Weatherburn, manager of Stevenage rail station, details of the refurbishment announced by First Capital Connect, which will include a smart new concourse and ticket hall and newly installed lifts.
Local MP Stephen McPartland said, "I am absolutely delighted Stevenage Station will be getting a make-over and the plans include the fully automated passenger lifts. We have all helped families struggling with suitcases and pushchairs up the stairs, so this will come as a welcome relief to everyone and especially disabled passengers. I very much look forward to working with First Capital Connect to deliver the modernisation plans with as little disruption as possible. This is another fantastic investment in our town, which we can be proud of."
The station concourse and ticket hall will receive new slip-resistant flooring, improved lighting and wall tiles. Areas behind the existing shops will be brought back into use, allowing for the existing units to be expanded. The existing lifts within the station will be completely replaced by modern lifts which can be operated by passengers.
