The Rt Hon Stephen McPartland

"The projections always factor in quieter aircraft, but from my own experience of living in Stevenage and directly under the flight path, the planes do not seem particularly quiet to me. I made it clear that any increase in capacity has to include noise reduction measures, so the quality of life locally is not affected, and we all have proper protections against disturbance from night flights.

"We were unable to come to an agreement on the proposed expansion plan and I confirmed I am opposing the expansion plans and raising my concerns directly with the Secretary of State for Transport to ask for the proposal to be called in for review. It seems particularly strange that Luton Borough Council owns the airport and is also responsible for agreeing the planning permission for the proposed expansion. It needs to be a fair and transparent decision by an independent party."
