Local MP, Stephen McPartland, launched the first inhaler recycling scheme, Complete the Cycle, at the Lister hospital, so that patients can now recycle their respiratory inhalers used to treat conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Stephen commented, “I am delighted to support this important scheme to help reduce the huge amount of inhalers that end up in landfill. The Complete the Cycle scheme should deliver huge environmental benefits, as well as providing hospital pharmacists with an opportunity to help minimise medicines waste.”

The Lister hospital in Stevenage is the first hospital in the UK to pilot Complete the Cycle, the first ever UK-wide inhaler recycling and recovery scheme for all inhalers, run by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in partnership with pharmacies across the UK. Patients can now simply return their inhalers to the hospital pharmacy, and play their part in dramatically reducing the impact on the environment caused by the landfill disposal of inhalers.

Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, is Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Asthma.
