1. Investing in our local schools and NHS

A £150 million redevelopment of the Lister Hospital and the QEII Hospital has been rebuilt, making them amongst the most modern and advanced facilities in the UK. Many of our GP surgeries are being rebuilt or modernised and I am continuing my campaign for a Satellite Radiotherapy Unit to be based in Stevenage.

Alongside this, many of our schools have been rebuilt, modernised or extended. It was shocking that under the previous Labour Government, only 6,412 of local children were being taught in Good or Outstanding local schools. This has now more than doubled to 14,209, which means an extra 7,797 of our children are receiving a better education. We hear lots of scare stories, but the facts speak for themselves.

2. Backing our local Police to keep us safe

I work closely with Hertfordshire Police to keep our area one of the safest in the UK. I am delighted we now have over 2,000 Police Officers in Hertfordshire, with the latest technology and equipment, which is more than we had 20 years ago. Even more are on the way, as part of our commitment to hire an extra 20,000 across the UK.

3. Investing in our local roads and rail services

I secured the funding to widen the A1(M) between Junctions 6 and 8, at a cost of £8 million a mile, with construction starting in March 2020, despite opposition from the local Labour Council.  Rail users are also seeing the benefits of 50% more trains, 100% more seats, treble the capacity and direct links to Gatwick and Brighton compared to 2010. New trains have arrived with more coming, a fifth platform is being built at Stevenage and investments at Knebworth station, where I am also working on improved disabled access.
