Airbus Defence & Space in Stevenage hosted their annual apprenticeship award challenge, which this year involved the apprentices building turbo jet engines. The contest was between teams of apprentices from Portsmouth and Stevenage, and the winning Stevenage team were presented with their award by Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage.
Stephen McPartland MP, said, "It is always a privilege to present the apprenticeship awards, as all the apprentices are a real credit to Stevenage and Airbus Defence & Space.
"The challenge took place in Tomorrow's Engineers Week where youngsters are being encouraged to consider working in technology and engineering. Stevenage employs about 10,000 scientists and engineers and we are the home of the space industry in the United Kingdom."We now have amongst the highest number of apprentices in the UK. Last year alone, over 830 of our young people started apprenticeships in Stevenage. My target is get to 1,000 each year and we are very close to it."
Apprentices play a major role in the £24 billion UK aerospace industry and Stevenage is fortunate to have major employers which value their apprentices.
