The Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage, has been officially opened at a ceremony attended by patients, staff and local supporters, including Stephen McPartland Member of Parliament for Stevenage.
Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, said, "I am delighted we are officially opening this wonderful facility today. It is another big step forward in helping to improve cancer care locally for patients and their families. The new facilities are already improving the patient experience at what is one of the most difficult times of their life. The Lister Hospital is a centre of clinical excellence and I am delighted we are all working with Macmillan to deliver excellent cancer care for local people."
The new £3 million centre, funded jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support and the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, will help to transform cancer care at the hospital. The new centre has doubled the chemotherapy capacity of the hospital’s previous unit, dramatically reducing overcrowding. It also contains a dedicated information and support centre for patients and families, as well as two gardens where patients can relax while undergoing treatment.
