Stephen McPartland MP is supporting Royal Mail's campaign to reduce the number of dog attacks on postal workers and to encourage responsible dog ownership. There were 22 attacks recorded across the Stevenage constituency from April 2013 to April 2014. Most attacks are not reported and recorded.

Stephen McPartland MP said, “Dog attacks are a significant issue faced by postal workers and members of the public. The Royal Mail, supported by the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, are doing a fantastic job promoting responsible dog ownership and I fully support this important campaign.

"The changes we have introduced to the Dangerous Dog Act ensures our postmen and women will have legal protection over attacks by dogs when they enter private property, including a customer’s garden. Tougher penalties will also be imposed for irresponsible dog owners."

Shaun Davis, Royal Mail Group Director of Health, Safety, Wellbeing and Sustainability said; “We’re pleased that Stephen McPartland MP is lending his support to our important campaign. Nobody should face this hazard whilst simply trying to do their job.”

On average around nine postmen and women a day are attacked by dogs across the UK with over 3,300 attacks taking place from April 2013 to April 2014, with some leading to a permanent disabling injury. The number of attacks has risen by 8 per cent nationally since 2012.
