Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage attended a Church service to remember the beginning of the First World War, 1914-1918. The service was held at the Parish Church of St Andrew & St George, with many people turning out to pay their respects.
Stephen McPartland MP said, "The service was very moving and gave us all an opportunity to pause and remember the sacrifices so many families made during the First World War. The terrible conflicts we are witnessing around the world today are an important reminder that the price of going to war is the terrible destruction of all those families who lose a loved one."
Tomorrow evening at 11pm, 100 years ago, was the moment that the United Kingdom entered the conflict to protect our ally Belgium from a German invasion. To mark the moment, I will be joining local people and members of the Royal British Legion at the Stevenage War Memorial for Lights Out. The Royal British Legion are encouraging everyone to turn out their lights for one hour between 10pm and 11pm on 4th August and leave a single candle burning for this symbolic act of reflection and hope."
